Shadows of War

watercolor, 11″ x 14″

The hidden impact of war on soldiers can manifest as moral injury which has been defined as perpetrating, failing to prevent, bearing witness to, or learning about acts that transgress their deeply held moral, spiritual, religious beliefs and expectations and the soldiers are haunted by the resulting inner conflict. Another invisible injury is Post-Traumatic Stress which is marked by clear biological changes as well as psychological symptoms. The multiple deployments resulting from extended engagement in violent unpredictable conflicts increase the risks of coming home with these dark shadows of war.
